How I Found Yoga

(Or Better Yet, How Yoga Found Me)

Because July is my birth month, I have been focusing the last few weeks on reflection. Reflection about my life, my yoga practice, my breath, my relationships, and my goals. My life has been full of twists and turns, bumps along the road, highs and lows.  And I wouldn't take any of it back. 


For the last 8 years, the one thing that has kept me going is my yoga practice.  I discovered yoga first as a child because of my background in gymnastics and then again after attending a partner yoga class with my late Aunt sometimes as a preteen. 

After college, I moved to New York City to pursue my dreams (which at the time included event management/planning). I lived near a yoga studio and started attending somewhat regularly.  Like many people, I first started rolling out my mat to reap the physical benefits.  I didn't even go beyond that for quite some time.  It's my belief that yoga found me before I was able to drop off the deep end.  My work at the time involved very long hours, weekends, nights, and holidays.  After moving to Westchester County when my now husband and I moved in together, my practice started to deepen.  I found my yoga community at Riverstone Yoga in Tarrytown, NY and I am so thankful for all my teachers along the way. 

It was around this time I started to reflect on what my life had been about up to that point. 

In my early teens (16-19), I was involved in a mentally and sometimes physically abusive relationship.  Around this time, I also lost my father to lung disease and found myself spiraling out of control.  There was a long stretch of time where I numbed out; with food, with alcohol, and with drugs. 


Through my yoga, I was able to release the built up resentments around my past and move on.  My yoga has taught me that I am strong on my own two feet, that I can find ease in moments of discomfort, that by just taking a deep breath in I can think before I react to tough situations, and so much much more. 

As time goes on, my practice has evolved into adding in more of the spiritual and mental aspects.  Mindfulness, meditation, breath work, stillness, mantras, affirmations, etc. The learning never ends and I love that there is always more to know. 

I can look back now and see that by practicing yoga and mindfulness, my life has unfolded in so many lovely and beautiful ways. My relationship with my husband is so strong, I have wonderful friends and family, and my dreams are starting to come true.  


That is why we have created My Tapas. We want to help yogis discover what their true potential is by redefining their practice.
