How Emily Found Yoga

How yoga came into my life

I think I was probably first introduced to yoga in class or as a group fitness offering at a gym when i was in high school. I loved the idea of it for a long time, and when I was a freshman in college I registered for a weekly vinyasa class at the rec center because I was trying to exercise more and lose weight. that time is a blur but I don’t think I really experienced yoga then, I wasn’t able to be still or get present because I was too worried thinking I needed more physical intensity to change my body. after that semester I didn’t keep up with a regular practice and kept myself busy by being miserable. In the middle of my sophomore year I transferred home and thought about trying yoga again. thinking it might help, I found a groupon for move your hyde - a new studio at the time - and I gave it a try. I loved it, the practice was challenging, motivating, and felt good in my body. I wasn’t sure what I was doing at the time, but i knew I wanted more. I couldn’t really afford classes, so I signed people in and cleaned the studio in exchange for classes. I didn’t have a car at school, so I took the bus across town to make it to the studio. while I was still creating a lot of misery for myself, move your hyde became my safe space - the place I felt good about, welcome, safe, and seen.

That was in 2010 and in the years since a lot has changed, many valleys and a few peaks. I’ve watched my practice, my body, my outlook, and my life change - I don’t know what things would be like if i hadn’t found yoga, but i know i am grateful that I did.
